The Conversation

Daily, for the last seven years, basically since Thing One could speak, we have been having a variation on the following conversation:

Mommy?
Yes?
(long pause as Thing One stares absently into the middle distance.)
What?
Oh. Nothing.

Perhaps an hour passes:

Mommy?
Yes?
(long pause as Thing One stares...)
What?
Huh? Oh. I forget.

Later in the day:

Mommy?
Yes?
(long pause as Thing One stares...)
What?
Hmmm. Nevermind.
(short pause as I gather my inner resources.)
Are you sure you do not have something you need to talk about?
No. I just like to say your name.

You can imagine how annoyed one might become by this.

Well, today I called my mother and we had this interchange:

Hello?
Hi, Mom.
(long pause)
(I giggle self-consciously)
Um, I don't really have anything to say. I just wanted to say "hi."

:)

Ha! Thing One sounds like The Girl - I figure that she's just so smart that it's hard to focus on minor things like keeping track of conversations and such.

Hehe, she just likes to say "Mommy" :) how sweet is that!
And no, it`s not annoying exactly for that very reason!
It really is annoying when someones( wink, wink) husband starts a conversation like this and the pause between a start of a sentence and the sentence itself can be ummmm ........ 5 - 10 minutes......... :(

Too Funny! With my daughter it was always (and still is at 15)....
"I have a question..." Then there is a pause that will last until one of us asks, "What?".

lol that is so cute :)

That just filled my soul a little and thank you. My daughter and I have similar conversations and me and my Mum, still, call each other far too often with nothing to say but just the love of a chat.

You are a great Mom :)
